SS-31, also known as Elamipretide, is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide that concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane. It belongs to the Szeto-Schiller peptide series, which is where the SS designation comes from.
It is one of the few research peptides with a clearly defined subcellular target: the phospholipid cardiolipin.

What is SS-31?
SS-31 is a four-amino-acid peptide with an alternating aromatic-cationic structure. That structure allows it to cross cell membranes without a transporter and to accumulate selectively at the inner mitochondrial membrane, in concentrations far above the surrounding cytosol.
Cardiolipin and the mechanism
Cardiolipin is a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it organises the components of the electron transport chain. Published research describes SS-31 as binding cardiolipin and being studied for its effect on cristae structure and electron transport efficiency.

SS-31 vs MOTS-c
